How to View Deleted Instagram Posts & Stories (2026 Guide)

Have you ever accidentally deleted a photo from your grid, or wanted to view a deleted Instagram post or expired story from an account you follow?

Because Instagram operates on real-time database indexing, once a post is permanently deleted or a story expires past its 24-hour window, Instagram removes it from active public feeds.

However, depending on your situation, there are legitimate methods to recover your own deleted content or view cached historical posts in 2026.

1. How to Recover YOUR OWN Deleted Instagram Posts

If you deleted a post, reel, or story from your own account within the last 30 days, Instagram keeps a backup in the "Recently Deleted" folder.

Recovery Steps:

  1. Open Instagram and go to your Profile.
  2. Tap the Menu Icon (3 lines) in the top right.
  3. Select Your Activity.
  4. Scroll down and tap Recently Deleted.
  5. Select the photo, reel, or story you want to recover.
  6. Tap the Three Dots (...) menu and choose Restore.

Important Limits:

  • Deleted Posts, Reels, and IGTV videos remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days before permanent erasure.
  • Deleted Stories remain in Recently Deleted for 24 hours (unless archived prior to deletion).

2. Check Your Story Archive & Highlight Vault

If a story disappeared after 24 hours, it wasn't deleted—it moved to your Story Archive.

  • Go to Profile > Menu (3 lines) > Archive.
  • Switch the dropdown to Stories Archive.
  • You can re-publish old stories, add them to Highlights, or download them to your device gallery.

3. How to View Historical / Cached Posts of Public Profiles

If another public account deleted a post or you want to view content that is no longer live on their grid, try these methods:

Method A: Search Engine Web Caching

Search engines index public Instagram pages constantly.

  • Open Google and search: site:instagram.com/username
  • Click the three vertical dots next to the search result link and select Cached.
  • Google will render the cached snapshot of the profile as it appeared before the post was removed.

Method B: The Internet Archive (Wayback Machine)

The Wayback Machine captures digital records of public web pages.

  • Visit archive.org.
  • Enter the exact profile URL: https://www.instagram.com/username/.
  • Select a calendar date to view the archived snapshot of the grid and photos.

4. Download Active Stories & Posts BEFORE They Get Deleted

The best way to ensure you never lose access to important public content, announcements, or stories is to save them while they are live.

Using AnonIG, you can view and save active public stories, highlights, and posts anonymously in full resolution:

  2. Type in the target account username.
  3. Download photos, reels, or stories directly to your phone or computer.

What Doesn't Work (Avoid Scam Apps)

🚨 CAUTION: Third-party websites claiming to "recover deleted private DMs" or "hack deleted private stories" are scams. Instagram server databases do not grant third-party access to deleted private media.
